French actor Gerard Depardieu just released his memoirs, entitled Ça s'est fait comme ça (That's how it was done). In them, the 65-year-old actor reveals that his mother attempted to abort him several times.
With a knitting needle.
His mother, Lillette loved his father, an alcoholic nicknamed Dédé, but she was weirded out by the relationship because Lillette's father and Dédé's mother were also having a liaison. French divorce law gave custody of children to the father, and Lillette believed her husband was not a fit parent.
She was the one who revealed to Depardieu that he was not wanted and that she wanted to get rid of him.
"To think I almost killed you!" she said.
He did not hold a grudge against her, and felt that she was right to do it.
In an interview with Le Point, he said: "I survived my mother's knitting needles. I was not wanted; desired, as they say, I should not have been born. I am a survivor."
