I'm from Quebec. We never used ushers-- at least not in the French churches. We all line up haphazardly, we all get Communion, no riots break out.
The first time I saw an usher in an English church in Quebec, it was a math teacher directing traffic during communion when my school went to Mass at the church next door. I just thought he was being a control freak. It never dawned on me this is how it was done in the rest of North America.
I never got the concept of ushers. People greeting parishoners and giving out bulletins, okay, but not ushers.
With the exception of Christmas, when you`re trying to find a spot to squeeze in.
(Psst... it's satire, in case that wasn't obvious).
