Very interesting article in The National Post.
Of course every act of sexual abuse should be denounced and prosecuted, especially when it involves people in authority.
What I fear, though, is that this will lead to anti-semitism.
There is a resurgence of anti-semitism in Europe. I have noticed that especially among French radTrad Catholics, there is a lot of anti-semitic rhetoric.
I think that while the Catholic abuse scandal damaged the Church, and has led to the defamation of good priests, on the whole, Catholics have not been harmed as individuals. Indeed, it has heightened awareness, and as a Catholic parent, I find that reassuring.
However, this type of accusation, if it is founded-- especially when it is founded-- leads to hostility towards Jews as a whole, even when they are innocent. "Those awful Jews sanction child abuse!" Jewish crime is like a dogwhistle to anti-semites to beat up Jews.
There's no reason not to investigate child abuse, but I fear the fallout.
