So how is this going to speed up the adoption process?
If you have to be paid to adopt...doesn't that amount to the commodification of family creation/expansion?
How would you feel if you knew your parents adopted you because of the incentive?
Don't laugh. There are people out there looking for ways to make money without having to go out to work.
I predict this measure will not lead to significantly more adoptions.
For one thing, many of these children have a lot of baggage. If people are willing to abort because they don't want to raise a child with Down Syndrome, they won't want to bring in a mentally damaged child into their lives, either. More money doesn't erase those problems.
For another, as I alluded to earlier, the process is very long. If you have to wait over two years to get a child, you will wait a long time to get your money. The financial incentive isn't forthcoming.
What might happen however is that relatives would be more inclined to be caretakers for their kin. They may be struggling to make ends meet, and a significant cash incentive would be helpful. I'm not sure this would amount to adoption, though.
