Artists – especially literary authors – have a lot of pull among people who have a hand on the levers of society: academics, the media, the rich, the politicos. The masses don’t have a lot to do with them. Artists don’t need the masses. They just need to speak to the right people.
Then their ideas inform the powerful.
Not ours.
