Now, to your surprise, no, that's not fair to you, to your consternation, you've found out that FOCA, if enacted, will invalidate your state's public health and safety laws on abortion And therein lies the pickle. So yes, you voted for Obama. And you still believe in Obama. And yet you had thought that these state laws were worthwhile efforts to protect lives even though they did not go as far as you would have liked in a perfect world. You've given it thought. You've given it prayer. You've talked with trusted voices in your community of faith. You've reached a decision.
You go to the phone, intent on dialing the Capitol Switchboard, (202) 224-3121, to reach your Representative and your Senators. After all, this representative democracy calls for your participation. You plan to tell them that now is the wrong time to take up FOCA.
(...)
"But Mr. President," you plead, "I voted for you despite your positions on abortion-related questions, not because of them. When you called, I was actually getting ready to call the Capitol to tell my representatives and senators that I hoped they would oppose passage of FOCA."
"YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND," the President snaps. Continuing, "there is nothing that could stymie our entire program of social improvement, that could frustrate the hopes of millions, that could freeze out change more than having the newly elected President fail in convincing Congress to pass the FOCA statute so that I can sign it as my first official act, like I promised."
