But what really separates Kormendy from [Conservative MP Chuck Strahl] is education, according to her.
“I guess the only thing that's different about me too with Chuck Strahl is that I'm educated,” she said. “Not to say he isn’t in a formal way, I have three degrees.
“He comes out of a high school and goes into the workforce. I come out of high school, I work for a while and since then I have a formal education. I have a degree in political science, minor anthropology… I have a degree in social work… and I also have a master’s of social work from UBC.”
As Steve Janke said....lah-dee-dah.
It's not even quite true that he got out of high school and went to work. He did attend Trinity Western university according to this wikipedia article.
Helen, here's another federal leader who doesn't have a degree:
Didn't do too shabby, this Gilles Duceppe guy. (He finished Cégep, but not university).
A university education does teach you how to look at things in an academic fashion. And that's all fine and good to do so in theory-driven and academic-type occupations.
But most things in life do not truly require a university education. Especially since a lot of the education you do get in college you can get on your own.
You need a university education to be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or some other highly specialized line of work.
You do not need a university education to do most other things in life.
I think a university education can reflect a certain cultural refinement, but cultural refinement isn't necessary to do much in this world. Certainly not to be an MP.
