NC: Family of slain woman wants fetal homicide law

Instead of celebrating the birth of the baby boy who was due Sunday, the family will hold a candlelight vigil tonight near the North Carolina Capitol to call attention to the deaths of Jennifer Nielsen and her 8-month-old fetus, who would have been named Ethen.

Nielsen, 22, a contractor who restocked newspaper vending boxes for USA TODAY, was found stabbed to death June 14 behind a convenience store in Raleigh. No arrests have been made.

Nielsen's relatives say their campaign isn't about politics, abortion or domestic violence. It is only about finding justice for Nielsen and her baby, they say.

There you have it folks. The man's daughter and grandson was killed, and the abortion rights people don't want to acknowledge the existence of that family member.

Their precious right to abortion is so sacrosanct that they can't even admit the truth: that a fetus is a member of the family.

Increasing the penalty does not do justice to describe the situation. If someone killed my husband and daughter, but justice system's response was to only count my husband's death and then add a few years because my daughter was killed as well, that would not be acceptable. A truly fair justice system would acknowledge and punish BOTH deaths as separate crimes. Whether my daughter is in my womb or not, she's my daughter. She's the same person to me and my family.
