Supreme Court of Canada won't hear feminist case

Thirty-six women from the Marine Drive Golf Club have lost the final round in their court battle to allow both genders into the club's lounge for men only.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Canada said it would not hear the women's case, a move effectively upholding an earlier ruling allowing the private club's Bullpen lounge to exclude women.

"It is quite a humiliating feeling to be discriminated against in that manner," she added. "It's really quite insulting."

source.

Guess what? You are not entitled to people's company. It's a private club. If a club wants to exclude women from their lounge, that is their right.

What is the matter with men getting together without women? Sometimes it's nice just to be with people of one's own gender.

I am glad that the Court stood up for Freedom of Association.

"I think the bottom line is that the legislation needs to be updated," she said, explaining that she'd hoped that change would have taken place at the country's top court.

I suspect that legislation would be ruled unconstitutional. It should be. Nobody should be made to associate with anyone else in a private setting.

"Placing clubs beyond the reach of the code just because they are 'private' would permit, for example, the formation of a co-op restaurant that attracts membership by providing, not only good food, but also an environment free of people of colour, or gays, or Muslims," the women said.

Or Christians. It cuts both ways. Why would you want to eat in a restaurant that didn't want you as a patron?
