A message from Canadians for Renewal

Received by email:

On the defeat to reopen the Same Sex "Marriage" debate:

Jesus asks us to work for His kingdom. He asks us to be obedient. He asks us to be holy. The results of our efforts are not in our hands, they're in His. He only asks that we be faithful to our calling. If we do all that is in our power, the rest is not our business. God is still God, we are only his humble servants.

God brings good out of evil. He would not allow evil to exist if it were not so. He brought the greatest good - our salvation - out of the greatest moral evil ever committed - the murder of God's own Son.

As to this same-sex "marriage" law, we have already seen the good that God has brought out of this evil.

When Paul Martin and his government passed the same-sex "marriage" law, we thought we had failed, that God had not heard our prayers, and I'm sure evil was convinced that it had won.

But Paul Martin did what the greatest Christian in Canada hadn’t been able to do - he united all Canadian Christians - Evangelicals, Catholics and Protestants, in prayer. Prayer like this country has never seen before. Through the last couple of years, there have been thousands of prayers going up to heaven from concerned Canadians. The passage of this law woke us up from our moral lethargy.

And although at this point we might not be able to see the fruits of these prayers, no sincere prayer from a humble heart is ever wasted. God will act in His own time, on His own terms.

I don't know why we were we surprised that the motion to re-open the same-sex "marriage" debate was not successful, when the motion also proposed to recognize same-sex unions and the already existing same-sex "marriages". Did we really expect God to let this motion pass? As far as I know, God does not compromise with evil and we shouldn't either. We as Christians should accept nothing less than full victory, not some cowardly political compromise.

We must not and will not give up the fight! All government leaders have said that this matter is now closed. We would like to tell them that as long as there is one Christian living in this country, this matter will never be closed! True Christians do not give up or lay down and die when they lose a battle, they determine to fight all the harder. Christianity would have ceased to exist in the first century if this had not been so.

We must not be discouraged. According to Jesus' revelation to St. Faustina, the greatest obstacles to holiness are discouragement and an exaggerated anxiety. These deprive us of the ability to practice virtue. Discouragement is the fruit of self-love. We should instead turn to God in all humility, trusting in His mercy and compassion.

If we truly want to renew our country and change the hearts of our nation’s leaders, first we have to renew our own lives and change ourselves. “Be the change you want to see in the world.” (Mother Teresa)

How can we expect our government officials and the rest of our country to embrace the Gospel Message when Christians embrace the ways of the world? “In the world, though not of it.”

Are we as God’s followers, faithful? Are we loving? Are we merciful? Loyal? Fervent? Obedient? Are we forgiving? Patient? Humble and Self-sacrificing? Are we holy? “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.” Do we?

Before we ask God to act, maybe we first need to acknowledge and confess that we have not lived up to what is required of us as God’s children, and that this, in part, has contributed to the demoralization of our country.

This may be a wicked age, but your lives should redeem it. (Eph 5:16)

We must befriend the friendless and comfort the sick and sorrowful. We must bear wrongs patiently by offering no resistance to the wicked. If anyone hits us on the right cheek we shall turn the left also; if anyone takes away anything from us, we shall not try to get it back. We shall forgive injuries by seeking no revenge but returning good for evil, by loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us and blessing those who curse us.

We shall have an absolute, unconditional, unwavering confidence in God our loving Father, even when everything seems to be a total failure.

We shall look to Him alone as our help and protector.

We shall stop doubting and being discouraged, casting all our worries and cares on the Lord, walking in total freedom.

We shall be daring and absolutely fearless of any obstacle, knowing that nothing is impossible with God.

We shall have total reliance on our Heavenly Father with the spontaneous abandonment of little children, totally convinced of our utter nothingness but trusting to the point of rashness with courageous confidence in His fatherly goodness.

The work of moral rearmament is carried out with discretion and love. We shall instruct by the power of the example of our lives lived entirely in and with Jesus Christ our Lord, bearing witness to the truth of the gospel by our single-minded devotion to and burning love of Christ and His Church, and also by verbal proclamation of the Word of God fearlessly, openly, and clearly, whenever opportunity offers. (Mother Teresa)

Put God’s armour on so as to be able to resist the devil’s tactics. For it is not against human enemies that we have to struggle, but against the Sovereignties and the Powers who originate the darkness in this world, the spiritual army of evil in the heavens. That is why you must rely on God’s armour, or you will not be able to put up any resistance when the worst happens, or have enough resources to hold your ground.

So stand your ground, with truth buckled around your waist, and integrity for a breastplate, wearing for shoes on your feet the eagerness to spread the gospel of peace and always carrying the shield of faith so that you can use it to put out the burning arrows of the evil one. And then you must accept salvation from God to be your helmet and receive the word of God from the Spirit to use as a sword.

Pray all the time, asking for what you need, praying in the Spirit on every possible occasion. (Eph 6:10-18)

“Work for the Lord with untiring effort and with great earnestness of spirit. If you have hope, this will make you cheerful. Do not give up if trials come; and keep on praying.” (Romans 12:11-12)

If we don’t give up the struggle we shall get our harvest at the proper time. (Gal 6:10)

Keep up the good fight!
