I went to a Campaign Life meeting on Monday night. Usually I give a summary of what occurred on this blog, but I think that the details are relatively minor compared to one general overarching idea that the President, Jim Hughes, sent to the audience.
He is in contact with pro-life leaders from around the world. When American pro-lifers lost many campaigns during the mid-terms at the beginning of this month, many American pro-life leaders realized why: they had not kept the politicians' feet to the fire. They were only too happy to vote for pro-life Republicans, without making sure they delivered.
Many of the lost votes were of pro-lifers who decided to stay home. They were not impressed with Republican leadership on pro-life issues.
In the same way, we Canadian pro-lifers should not be complacent. Too many Big-C Conservatives think that they can count on our vote. Too many pro-lifers blindly vote Conservative without considering who they are voting for. Too many pro-lifers are more conservative than pro-life. They won't vote Liberal for any reason.
If we are to keep politicians accountable, we must be ready to switch allegiances if necessary.
The Conservatives have yet to give us anything on the pro-life front.
But once a pro-lifer does get elected, we should get involved and support him 100%. Those of us in his political party should try to get on riding associations, volunteer for his campaign, sent messages of support, etc.
We can't just be complacent in our vote.
