Mr. Gori points to government's inability to control escalating health care costs as the main issue. According to the FCP chief:
It would be too easy to criticize Honorable Smitherman for his choice of vulgar words, or for the reneged government promise not to raise taxes, which was promptly broken. But the situation is more serious.
The Liberals, once in power, have been forced to increase taxes and to decrease covered services. However, costs are still escalating, more nurses have been fired and doctors shortages remain.
He says if costs are not kept under control, the system as we know it will suffer. He wonders: "Which services will be dropped from the OHIP coverage list the next time around?"
None of the opposition leaders are helping the issue. The NDP would continue the same tactic of throwing more money at the problem, whereas:
"The Progressives' leader John Tory accused the government of "passing the buck on healthcare" when a quick look at the policy on their web site shows no proposal whatsoever, but just critical comments on government actions."
Only the Family Coalition Party has a radical plan to reform healthcare by using Medical Savings Accounts, combined with a high-deductible insurance and by introducing choice in the health insurance business.
