Religion should never be used to justify war – pope

Religion should never be used as excuse or pretext for war, Pope Benedict XVI said in a message to interfaith leaders gathered for a summit on peace.

"No one is therefore permitted to use the motive of religious difference as a reason or pretext for bellicose behaviour toward other human beings," Benedict said in the message.

Violence is not caused by faith itself, the pope said, but "by the cultural limits with which it is lived and with which it develops in time."
