Another Update: Status of Women

I just thought I'd put forward these links to two news stories about SOW.

Organizations brace for Tory cuts

Hundreds of groups and organizations across the country are waiting anxiously for Ottawa to finish its review of government programs and grants.

The government has spent the last seven months looking for $2 billion in savings.

Next week, it is expected to announce which programs and organizations will have to make do with less money, and which ones will be cut off altogether.

Alison Dewar, a former employee of the National Association of Women and the Law, worked in the organization's downtown Ottawa office until the government funding ran out and everyone was laid off. Now, the association is hoping its funding will be renewed.

"We haven't heard a thing about whether we'll be hearing soon, [or] if it's pending the review," she said.

From Canadian Press/CTV:

OTTAWA -- A pair of women's groups that had prepared to close their doors for fear of cuts by the Conservative government learned Friday their federal funding has been secured for at least another year.

The National Association of Women and the Law and the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action had both taken steps to scale down their operations because of unusual delays in getting approvals for their funding.

Uncertainty has reigned around programs supported by Status of Women Canada since a campaign began this summer by pro-Conservative groups to axe the department. Status of Women Minister Bev Oda has so far failed to publicly defend her department, and has instead made allusions to mismanagement and wasted funds.

Pro-Conservative groups (plural)? As far as I know, this involves REAL Women and a bunch of individual bloggers. Perhaps some other groups are doing some lobbying, but I don't know anything about it. I wonder if the writer is trying to build up the opposition.

UPDATE: Liberal MP Stronach Suggests Only Pro-Abortion Women's Organizations Should Receive Gov't Funds from Lifesite.

This is precisely what I am campaigning against: the idea that only women with a certain ideology are allwoed to be heard.
