Yes, I do occasionally call it the "abortion debate" because that's what everyone else calls it.
But we should stop.
It should be called the "fetal rights" debate.
Why?
So many reasons.
For one thing, it's not about abortion per se. In the minds of the people, what the debate is about is stopping an operation. It's not about stopping a horrible death, or the absence of equality for the unborn.
So people say things like "why not just work to reduce the number of abortions, i.e. promote contraception (which they don't know is abortive) promote sex education, etc."
They feel really satisfied with themselves for putting forward the "sensible", middle-of-the-road position that each side should agree with.
But that's not what it's about.
It's about the RIGHTS of UNBORN CHILDREN.
And the more we call it the "abortion debate" the more this gets lost.
Plus, people think it's about an operation to help women.
Should we help women? Of course.
But then the argument goes: why not allow them to "terminate the pregancy"?
If the debate is called the "fetal rights" debate, you have the answer to the question. The question shouldn't even come up.
I hope I have persuaded all pro-lifers reading to begin adopting that terminology, or something similar to it. If we don't call it the "fetal rights debate" the poor-choicers will not know what it's about, or will forget what it's about.
