It appears a keepsake ultrasound clinic will open for business after Labour Day, but it already has 50 bookings.
"Keepsake ultrasounds" are ultrasounds of one's unborn baby for bonding and photography purposes.
And these aren't the grainy 2D ultrasounds. By the looks of the picture, they appear to be 3D ultrasounds-- where you can see a sharper image of the baby.
Some people fear that this might lead to sex selection abortions. The owner writes:
Bethune said for the best quality pictures, he recommends women come in between 25 and 26 weeks' gestation. "At that point in time, it's really too late to do an abortion anyway," he said.
Well, not if you were really determined, and prepared to travel to the States.
Some people are concerned about the potential effects of too many ultrasounds. A recent study on mice was said to show that ultrasound may have negative effects on human fetuses, but you have to consider that mice's brains are way smaller than fetal brains, that the waves are proportionally greater than with respect to human fetal brains, and that some of the unborn mice were exposed to 7 hours of ultrasound. Yeah, that might do some damage.
I'm not that worried.
I think this goes to show that the notion that the fetus is a "blob of tissue" or that the unborn child is not a person is bunk. People treat their unborn kids like people. Isn't it time they had some rights?
