5000 gather on Parliament Hill to pray for Christian values

Young Christians hope prayers will push MPs to 'restore morality'

OTTAWA (CP) - Love thy politician.

It's better to pray for elected lawmakers than to berate them, say the organizers of a demonstration Saturday that drew thousands of Christians to Parliament Hill.

They came from across Canada to pray for a reconsideration of gay marriage, a Liberal private member's bill that would outlaw abortion after 20 weeks of gestation, and Conservative efforts to raise the age of sexual consent to 16 from 14.

The Bible instructs believers to honour and pray for those in authority, said organizer Christina Groot, 26, of Vancouver.

"We're not pointing the finger at our politicians," she said in an interview. "We really honour them as our leaders, and I think that's a rare thing for them."

The daylong prayer session was part of a growing movement to "see morality restored in Canada," said Faytene Kryskow, 31, another organizer.

Through a blaring sound system, she rallied a police-estimated throng of about 5,000 faithful.

"In the name of Jesus, we take back our sexual purity!" she exclaimed to a chorus of "Amen!" and "Thank you, Jesus!"

This event is known as "The Cry 2"
