Canadian pro-lifers need to act up more

This post is in response to the recent National Post op-ed saying we need an abortion law:

I strongly agree with this, of course.

However, one comment got my attention:

Yet such fears are obsolete. Two generations of Canadian women have been able to procure safe, legal abortions. The practice of aborting a non-sentient fetus in the early months of gestation is now tolerated, if not condoned, by the vast majority of Canadians. No government, Conservative or Liberal, will ever take that right away. We can debate the correct balance between respect for life and female autonomy without arousing fears that our society will be cast back to the 1950s.

How come people are that confident that we will never get rights for the unborn child?

Because pro-lifers in Canada are not politically successful.

I believe that there are A LOT more pro-lifers out there than meets the eye.

It's just that they are isolated and cowed into silence. Their churches aren't pro-life and they think they're the only pro-lifer around.

We have to reach out to these people and get them to become active.

Now mind you, if people feel that comfortable about there never being an abortion ban, maybe it's just as well. They might feel okay about allowing some restrictions.

But in the long run, we have to get more pro-lifers involved in the struggle, in creating a social consensus that unborn children are equals and worthy of rights.
